Are you on a short business trip? Did you find yourself alone in New York? Whatever the case, New York caters to groups, couples and lone travelers. Some would even say that New York is best seen solo. Here’s a list of great things solo travelers can enjoy.
The beautiful and busy train terminal of New York is the ultimate spot to spend some quality time with yourself. Kill time in Grand Central by having a drink at the famous Campbell Bar or order a plate of fresh oysters at Oyster Bar & Restaurant. If you want to wander and sample gourmet food, visit the Grand Central Market. Before you head out, walk off some of that food by hunting down all the Vanderbilt acorns or identifying constellations from the Main Concourse’s ceiling. Get more fun facts about Grand Central Terminal on our blog.
Seeing New York on foot is one of the best ways to get a feel for the city. Why not take the morning off to stroll its most scenic areas? If you want trees, vast lawns and ponds, Central Park is just for you. Browse the self-guided walks on their website and download your favorite. Do you instead prefer water views? Then, head to Manhattan’s West Side! The Hudson River Greenway stretches for over 10 miles, you can walk, run or cycle along it.
While you’re on the West Side, a visit to the High Line is a must. Since the construction of Hudson Yards, the High Line almost connects Midtown Manhattan to Chelsea and Lower Manhattan. Keep a sharp eye for three things: rotating sculptures and urban art on the buildings lining the park, seasonal plants in bloom and local wildlife.
After spending time enjoying the wonders of nature, head to Chelsea’s free art galleries and admire artwork. What we love about Chelsea is that you can spend an entire day indulging in contemporary works of art created by newbies or senior artists.
Lastly, have you ever wanted to stand where great writers once stood? We have put together a self-guided tour of historic sites that are part of New York’s rich literary past. Once you’re done following the steps of the great ones, get lost in New York’s best bookstores and libraries. From the New York Public Library to the famous Strand Bookstore, discover or rediscover legendary authors from all over the world.
A solo traveler should never forgo having a drink or two at a New York bar. Luckily, Bar 44 is located right in Royalton New York’s lobby. Book one of our special hotel offers and get the #RoyalTreatment.
