How to Experience WorldPride NYC 2019

The largest Pride celebration in the world is happening right here in New York. Celebrations are happening all over the city throughout the entire month of June. Find out everything about the events right here!

Why Is 2019 So Big?

First, this year marks the 50th anniversary of the Stonewall Uprising, a turning point in the LGBTQIA+ liberation movement. Second, New York is hosting WorldPride for the first time while simultaneously hosting the annual NYC Pride celebrations. As a result, NYC Pride’s 2019 season is dually branded Stonewall50 and WorldPride 2019 with the theme “Millions of Moments of Pride.”

Explore LGBTQIA+ Historic and Cultural Sites in NYC

One of the most fascinating aspects of this year’s Pride celebrations is the reflection on the five days of Stonewall Riots and their significance. It all started on June 28, 1969 when the police raided the Stonewall Inn in Greenwich Village. Angry by the constant raids, the LGBTQIA+ community fought back and sparked a liberation movement. Today, a monument stands on Christopher Street Park to commemorate the riots, their importance and the people who took part in them.

If you’re curious to learn more about iconic sites in New York’s LGBTQIA+ history, explore the interactive map created by NYC LGBT Historic Sites project. It includes landmarks such as the Judson Memorial Church, the Leslie+Lohman Museum of Gay & Lesbian Art and Studio 54. Click on each site and get access to images and a detailed account of the site’s significance.
